Edible East Bay Magazine, Summer 2013 issue

These pictures were taken on my phone. Sorry for the quality. Again, this is not my magazine cover, but it is included for recognition of the issue. I can't believe how many of my illustrations were used for this issue! I am so grateful to Helen Krayenhoff, the art director for Edible East Bay Magazine. She has been a pleasure to work with!  I hope to eventually get some decent photos of these articles and post them. For now, these will do.

3 Characters, 3 Excerpts

Three characters, inspired by three excerpts, from popular/classic novels.
Very glad I didn't recognize the descriptions as I attempted to design my characters. I did a few quick rough sketches, but ultimately wanted to do a wood burning. After designing the characters,  our designs were to be altered to replicate one specific artist's style; as we were given the options of only a few artists. I debated be between M. Sasek and Ed Emberley. I finally decided I would do one of each, but alas, ran out of time. It's still never too late to create on my own, outside of class.  After I completed the wood burning (pic of final piece will be posted later), I still didn't feel it accurately depicted his wood-block style. My next best attempt was to carve a rubber stamp. I think the results were much closer than the wood burning. Both processes were enjoyable. The rest of the sketches, final wood burning, and third character will be posted later.

The Shooting of Dan McGrew

I was mildly inspired by the characters from the poem, The Shooting of Dan McGrew. More than anything, I wanted to find inspiration from Art Deco architecture. I ended up spending most of my time cutting art deco-esque patterns into rubber stamps. Some of the stamps you can see in the colored, female sketches. I rushed my final piece, which ended up not having quite the same appeal as the character designs below. I should, however, take nice pictures of the stamps. That is where the real project development can be found.

30 Sketches

As you might have guessed from the posting title, there are many more than just this one. I will eventually take pictures of the ones I like best and post them. For now, I thought this one was pretty funny. I sat and watched a few of my favorite tv shows for inspiration. This one in particular came from Parks and Recreation. Bert Macklin, FBI (aka, Andy Dwyer).

70's Game Show Host & Contestant

Re-Vamp of Bank Robber Project

Some of these might be repeat posts, but it's nice to see the comparison and change.

Circle, Square, Triangle

It was suggested during my critique, that I make Nasrettin Hoca much larger, consuming the circle, and place him on a tiny donkey. I will probably do a new sketch of that eventually.

Edible East Bay Magazine, Spring 2013 Issue

These might not be the best splices of my illustrations from the article, but they serve their purpose. The magazine cover is not mine, but is included for identifying the issue.
